Flexor Hallucis Longus Special Tests

FHL Strength Test

To do:

With the client seated, and their foot in a neutral position

The therapist gets the client to flex their big toe.

The therapist then tries to bring the toe out of flexion

Positive sign:

The client is unable to resist the therapist’s force

FHL Length Test

To do:

With the client in a seated position,

the therapist brings the client’s ankle into dorsiflexion and the big toe into extension

Positive sign:

Limited range of motion or a stretch felt along the muscle
