Extensor Carpi Radialis Longus Special Tests

Radial Nerve Floss

To do:

With the client supine, the therapist depresses the shoulder,

Next, they bring the shoulder into abduction

Then the therapist externally rotates the client’s shoulder

The therapist brings the client’s wrist and fingers into extension, followed by elbow flexion

Positive Sign:

Feeling of stretch along the radial nerve path

ECRL Strength Test

To do:

With the client seated, the client places their forearm into extension and wrist into radial deviation.

The therapist tries and moves the client into forearm flexion and wrist ulnar deviation as the client resists

Positive Sign:

The client is unable to withstand the force of the therapist

ECRL Length Test

To do:

The therapist places the client’s forearm into flexion and wrist into ulnar deviation

Positive Sign:

Restricted range of motion or a stretch felt along the muscle
