Levator Scapulae Strength Test

To do:

With the client in a supine position, the therapist stabilizes the ipsilateral scapula

The therapist then brings the clients neck into a contralateral side bend with rotation of the head

The client tries to stay in this position, while the therapist tries to bring the client out of this position.

Positive sign:

The client is unable to maintain the movement against gravity or the therapist’s force

To do:

With the client in a supine position, the therapist stabilizes the ipsilateral scapula and contralaterally side bends and rotate the head 

Positive sign:

Restricted range of motion or a stretch felt along the muscle
