Splenius Cervicus Special Tests

Posterolateral Neck Flexors Strength Test

To do:

With the client supine,

The client abducts their arm to 90 degrees, flexes their elbow to 90 degrees and rests the back of their hands on the table. The client  extends their neck, while the therapist stabilizes the side being tested.

The client then rotates their head towards the side being tested.

The client holds that position.

If they can keep that position, then the therapist holds the temporalis area of the unaffected side, then pushes in an obliquely posters-lateral direction away from the tested side

Positive sign:

The client is unable to hold their neck against gravity or therapist’s resistance.
